Neither the size nor complexity of the data you manage should be limiting factors in your organization’s efficiency. Berico enables you to get ahead of your information, ensuring that data remains a tool, not a hindrance, to your users. Our solutions help navigate and manage “big data” issues. We believe that the best decisions can’t be made in silos; when you are empowered to use everything available, everything is possible. What’s possible continues to evolve, which is exactly where Berico focuses.
We are passionate about applying truly cutting-edge technologies in open source and cloud environments. The range of disciplines span distributed processing, virtualization, natural language processing, large data storage, rich client interfaces, event stream processing and Service-Oriented Architecture to name just a few.
We are blazing trails in the use of capabilities such as: Hadoop, Puppet, MapReduce, VoltDB, Cassandra, RavenDB, CouchDB, MongoDB, Neo4j, Clojure, Scala, Haskell, Python, Ruby on Rails, and many more. By embracing the use and leading the evolution of new technologies, Berico brings revolutionary capability to our clients while providing meaningful and exciting careers for our engineers.
Our solutions and our specialists are “data agnostic” – we don’t limit ourselves to one type of data source (i.e. biometrics, geospatial, etc.). Berico specializes in working with and fusing multiple data types, a critical approach that allows us to keep pace with the rate and advent of new data sources coming on line.

WHY WE’RE COMMITTED TO OPEN SOURCE
Licensed solutions have rigid functionality that cannot grow and adapt with the changing demands of a business. Upgrades and support services are entirely dependent on the vendor, and customizing code is cumbersome. Additionally, expensive licensing fees drive up costs for a system that, from the minute it’s packaged, will already start falling behind the latest innovations in technology development.
Berico’s investment in independent research and open-source technologies present multiple significant advantages in delivering quality solutions for your business.
• Immediate Impact – instead of recreating the wheel each time, Berico employs proven core technologies to provide a framework for our solutions. This enables us to get a head-start on the development process and deliver results faster. Your organization can start addressing its problems today, instead of waiting months or years for development to be completed.
• Best Leveraging of Government Investments – Berico has been involved in several major cloud and high performance analytics programs across the government. We facilitate government-to-government coordination for re-architecting previously funded solutions when appropriate. Our focus is on interoperability and cost effectiveness.
WHY LEVERAGE THE CLOUD?
Cloud has become a term to collectively represent three new paradigms for IT service delivery, all based on distributed technologies. In general, each paradigm addresses the organizational needs of scaling existing IT services and consolidating resources. Each paradigm accomplishes these requirements in a unique way and can be complimentary when implemented together:
• Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS): addresses the need for an organization to host and maintain its own IT hardware resources. IAAS is intimately related to a number of technologies:
o Virtualization: a technology to allow one server to host multiple operating system instances simultaneously, or many servers to host a single operating system instance. Virtualization brings significant cost savings to an organization by collapsing their IT services to fewer servers, allowing for greater utilization of their hardware, and more efficient consumption of electricity and cooling resources.
o Elastic Storage: a technology to dynamically change the storage capacity of a network by adding or removing servers. Elastic Storage also addresses availability concerns by replicating and distributing data across racks of servers or server farms.
o Elastic Computation: a set of technologies that allow the dynamic allocation of computational resources to an application. Elastic Computing in many cases is grid or cluster computing, where a single algorithm is distributed to machines on the network.
• Platform as a Service (PaaS): provides a consistent platform for organizations to deploy “self-contained” applications into a cloud without needing to understand the complexities of building and maintaining a large architecture. Most commercial PAAS architectures are platform specific (Java, Microsoft, Python), targeting developers with a specific programming skillset and are not intended to be installed into an organization’s private cloud.
Organizations with the resident technical skill required to create PAAS architectures can realize amazing benefits employing this paradigm. PAAS’s require applications to behave in a uniform manner, which reduces maintenance burden and generally increases the overall cohesiveness of applications in the platform.
• Software as a Service (SaaS): conceptually represents the delivery of software as web-based services. Technically, any website can be considered a SAAS application, but the term is more generally applied to complex browser-based applications that replace a commonly used desktop program. For instance, “Google Docs” is considered a SAAS application since it is considered a viable alternative to Microsoft Word.
For years, organizations have moved towards web-based software delivery because these applications tend to be easier to maintain, are naturally multiplatform, and deploy consistently into any environment.
While the term Cloud appears to be an “ethereal” marketing message, it does represent a number of emerging paradigms and practices that can help an organization tame its IT architecture.
